How to Use Windows for Natural Ventilation and Cross-Breezes

  • Open windows on opposite walls of a room, or on opposite sides of your home, so air has a straight path to travel.
  • Pair a window on the windward side (the side the breeze is coming from) with one on the leeward side (the sheltered side). This creates the pressure difference that pulls air through.
  • Keep interior doors open along the path so air is not blocked partway through.

If you are not sure which way the wind is coming from, step outside and pay attention, or check the wind direction in your weather app before you open up.

Timing Is Everything

Natural ventilation only cools your home when the outside air is cooler than the inside air. That makes timing the most important part of the whole strategy.

Open up in the evening and overnight. Once the sun goes down and outdoor temperatures fall below your indoor temperature, open your windows wide and let the cool air flow in. This is when cross-breezes do their best work, flushing out the heat your home absorbed during the day.

Close up in the morning. Before the day heats up, usually by mid-morning, close your windows and draw the shades on the sunny side of the house. This traps the cooler air you collected overnight and blocks the heat from getting back in. A well-sealed home can hold that cooler temperature for hours.

Watch the forecast. On days that stay mild, you may be able to keep windows open and skip the AC entirely. On hot, humid days, it is better to stay closed up and let your cooling system handle it.

The Stack Effect: Using Heat to Your Advantage

Warm air rises. You can use that simple fact to ventilate a two-story home very effectively through something called the stack effect.

Open windows on your lower level and your upper level at the same time. Warm air naturally rises and escapes through the upper windows, which creates suction that pulls cooler air in through the lower ones. This vertical airflow can move a surprising amount of air without any wind at all. If you have a window at the top of a stairwell or on an upper landing, it becomes a natural chimney for hot air to exit.

  • Window screens keep bugs out while letting air flow freely, so you can leave windows open overnight without unwelcome visitors.
  • Window treatments like blinds, shades, and curtains block solar heat gain during the day. Closing them on the sunny side keeps your home cooler so your overnight ventilation has less work to do.
